John and Kelly: 'We are heartbroken'

Travoltas903.jpg

It was supposed to be a joyous getaway to celebrate the New Year. But a family holiday for John Travolta, wife Kelly Preston and their two children — son Jett, 16, and daughter Ella, 8 — turned into tragedy when a shocking accident claimed Jett's life. After having a seizure in the family's home at the Old Bahama Bay Resort on Grand Bahama Island, Jett is believed to have hit his head in the bathroom. He was later discovered unconscious.

"I did everything I could to keep [him] alive," John reportedly said. But his efforts were to no avail. At Rand Memorial Hospital, Jett was pronounced dead on arrival.

Sadly, Jett's death was just the beginning of the family's nightmare.

Life & Style exclusive: John Travolta comes home

travoltahome.jpgJohn Travolta has returned from the Bahamas after the tragic death of his son, Jett, Life & Style can exclusively report.

"John drove into his development in Ocala, Fla., at about 3:20 p.m. today," an eyewitness tells Life & Style. "He was in a silver SUV. He was in the passenger seat and he had a driver. There was no sign of his wife, Kelly [Preston], in the car. He just stared straight ahead. He was wearing sunglasses. He just looked serious."

"He also had a police escort in front of him. They arrived through the main entrance of his development. He must have parked his plane at the airport because he obviously didn't fly it in here. There are several news trucks outside the development waiting for any more news."

Travolta's neighbors share memories of Jett with Life & Style

Neighbors of John Travolta and Kelly Preston in Ocala, Fla., tell Life & Style of their deep sorrow over the Jan. 2 death of the couple's 16-year-old son, Jett.

"I'll always remember Jett's beautiful smile. If you had a bad day, it was his smile that warmed your heart," Jacob Urbowicz, who lives next door to the Travoltas in Jumbolair, a community built around a private airstrip, tells Life & Style.

"Jett was very happy whenever we saw him. My memory is of him waving at us every time he went by on a golf cart. He would ride around in it for fun on the property with two caretakers. He was never alone.

"This is a small community. John's famous, but he was always one of us. It's devastating; no words can describe what they lost. Our thoughts and prayers are with them."

Jacob's wife, Lisa, also extends her deepest sympathies to the family.

"As the mother of two boys, I can understand the heartache they must be going through," she tells Life & Style.

"You see them grow up, and then something like this happens -- it's just...too much. It's something you cannot even describe in words."

How did Jett Travolta die?

Travoltas902.jpg

While Jett Travolta's heartbroken parents, John Travolta and Kelly Preston, struggle to come to terms with their loss, pathologists in the Bahamas are conducting an autopsy today to find out the exact cause of the teenager's death.

Jett, 16, died on Friday after suffering a seizure while on vacation with his family in the Bahamas, according to Travolta attorney Michael Ossi. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital and pronounced dead on arrival.

Once the autopsy is completed, the results will be given to Jett's grieving parents — who can then decide whether to make them public.

In a statement on John's Web site, travolta.com, he and Kelly called Jett "the most wonderful son that two parents could ever ask for.... We are heartbroken that our time with him was so brief."
