Patrick Swayze: peace at last

939SWAYZE.jpg I keep dreaming of a future, a future with a long and healthy life," Patrick Swayze told the world during the Stand Up to Cancer telethon in September 2008. Sadly, it was a dream he would not see come true. Just six months before the telethon, the beloved star had announced he was fighting his own battle with pancreatic cancer. And a year later, on Sept. 14, 2009, he lost it, succumbing to the disease at the age of 57.

But he passed away on his own terms. Rather than stay in the hospital, he recently returned to his home in Los Angeles, which he shared with the love of his life, his wife of 34 years, Lisa Niemi. When he died, he had Lisa -- and other members of his family -- by his side.

Patrick Swayze: A fighter until the end

PatrickSwayze904.jpg

From the moment he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a year ago, Patrick Swayze has defied the odds. Even on Jan. 9, when he checked himself into the hospital with pneumonia — possibly the result of a chemotherapy-weakened immune system — the cast and crew of his new A&E FBI drama, The Beast, seemed optimistic. "For him, I think it's just a bump in the road," said co-executive producer Vincent Angell that day.

No one is more hopeful than Patrick himself. In an interview that aired Jan. 7, the actor, 56, told ABC's Barbara Walters that although he hopes to live until there's a cure, he knows "two years seems likely."

And he intends to stay very busy, spending as much time as possible with his wife of 33 years, Lisa Niemi.

Patrick Swayze hospitalized for pneumonia

Less than a week before the premiere of his new police drama, The Beast, Patrick Swayze, who is battling pancreatic cancer, was hospitalized for pneumonia.

"Patrick has asked that I tell you that he has checked himself into the hospital this morning for observation after coming down with pneumonia," said A&E president and general manager Robert
DeBitetto
at an LA press event. "Chemo-therapy can take its toll on the immune system, and illnesses are a part of that. Patrick wishes me to tell you that he's very sorry he cannot attend, but he plans to get back to promoting The Beast soon. He thanks everybody for the outpouring of support. We hope to see him back on his feet soon."

In an interview on ABC on Wednesday, Swayze, 56, told Barbara Walters that he may not have long to live. "Two years seems likely if you're going to believe statistics," he said.

Patrick Swayze refuses to let pancreatic cancer get the best of him. The actor, 56, attended the Grey Goose Vodka wrap party for his new A&E FBI drama, The Beast, at Chicago's The Underground club on Nov. 23. "Even after working long, hard days, he let loose with smiles and hellos and spread happiness," Billy Dec, owner of The Underground, tells Life & Style. "He's high on life!"
