Introducing the First Puppy

At last! The wait for a presidential pooch is over. When a furry Portuguese water dog named Bo made his debut at the White House on April 12, the Obamas finally welcomed their first-ever pet -- and the country got an adorable new mascot.

Though there had been talk of a goldendoodle, a mix of golden retriever and standard poodle, the 6-month-old male Portie won out when he was offered as a gift from Massachusetts senator Ted Kennedy, a close friend of the president's.

As president of the United States, Barack Obama can provide almost anything for his youngest daughter -- smiley, adorable Sasha. The 7-year-old has her own room in the White House, receives visits from her favorite band, the Jonas Brothers, and wears clothes that aren't even available in stores yet -- like the pink J.Crew coat she modeled at her father's swearing-in ceremony on Jan. 20. But there's one thing her powerful dad can't do for her: relieve the pain of missing her friends and family back home in Chicago.

The Obama girls love their new life

Now that all the celebrations in honor of President Barack Obama's Jan. 20 swearing-in have ended, it's time for the nation's 44th president to get to work. But for his kids, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, the party is just getting started!

Only days into their new roles as first daughters, they're taking advantage of all the perks that life in the White House has to offer. That's already included an inauguration-night sleepover with friends who had flown in from their hometown of Chicago. The girls watched movies like Bolt and High School Musical, then had a scavenger hunt — which had a VIP surprise waiting for them at the end: a visit from their favorite band, the Jonas Brothers.

In Life & Style's special inauguration issue: History is made!

It was a bitterly cold 28 degrees in Washington, D.C., yesterday, but the crowd of roughly 2 million people gathered to see Barack Obama sworn in as America's 44th president didn't seem to feel the chill. With his wife, Michelle, and their daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, proudly looking on, Obama took the oath of office on the steps of the U.S. Capitol at 12:05 p.m.

"The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit," he pledged, "to choose our
better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness."

It was a day many in the crowd never dreamed they would see, and while some cheered, others wept openly, overwhelmed by the emotion and weight of the moment.
