Five Things You Didn't Know About Ke$ha

ke$ha.jpg

Ke$ha's catchy beat "Tik Tok" soared up the charts in the past couple of months, finding its new home on the Billboard's Hot 100! (It's number one this week!) This glittery singer even beat Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" record for the most airplay of a song on the radio in one week! But where did this California native come from? All we know is that it doesn't look like she's going anywhere anytime soon!

Five Things You Didn't Know About Ke$ha:
1. She appeared on an episode of The Simple Life back in 2005 with socialites Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie.

2. Though she's new to mainstream, this 22-year-old has been writing songs and singing her entire life. After relocating to Nashville, producers Dr. Luke and Max Martin (They work with Britney Spears!) convinced her to return to Los Angeles in 2005 to pursue her music career.

3. Growing up wasn't easy for Ke$ha's, who's real name is Kesha Sebert. "Three years ago I was stealing canned vegetables from the dollar store to survive," she says. "Now I'm on a No. 1 song, working on my album, and have a little change in my pocket. To be able to take my mom out to dinner is the best feeling in the world."

4. In hopes of getting her music produced by Prince, Ke$ha snuck in his Beverly Hills home to personally give him her demo CD. She was escorted out by security.

5. Though unaccredited, Ke$ha sang back up vocals in Flo Rida's summer jam, "Right Round".

Ke$ha is set to hit the stage this spring joining Drake, Paramore, and many more at Bamboozle on May 1st and May 2nd at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, NJ!

Do you like Ke$ha? Is she someone you want to see more of in J-14?

"Here It Goes Again" by OK Go
"It was the first viral music video when YouTube first became big!" -- Assistant Art Director Erik Jacobsen

"Hey Ya!" by Outkast
"This video is just so fun and entertaining, and it's a song that everyone still loves to bop their heads to!" -- Photo Assistant Katelyn Mullen

"Wake Me Up When September Ends" by Green Day
"This movie-like video completely upped the bar on music videos. The love story is so poignant (dare I say it rivals Edward and Bella?!) and the tragedy so heart-wrenching." -- Editor-in-Chief Rachel Chang

"You Belong With Me" by Taylor Swift (Featured)
"Yo Kanye, I'm really happy for you. I'm gonna let you finish, but Taylor had one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!" -- Photo Director Danielle Kepler

NSYNCCourtesyOfJive.jpg

As the decade draws to a close, the J-14 staff reflects back on our favorite songs of the decade:

"Bye Bye Bye" by *NSYNC (Pictured)
"I would spend hours watching TRL learning the music video -- that song made me fall in love with Justin Timberlake." -- Associate Editor Kim Messina

"SexyBack" by Justin Timberlake
"I remember hearing that song for the first time in my car and wondering who on earth was singing it because I couldn't make out the voice at all. At the end of the song, radio station Z100 said it was Justin Timberlake, and I thought, 'This will either make or break his career.' Now I'm glad he took the risk!" -- Assistant Editor Emily Krauser

"21st Century Breakdown" by Green Day
"It pretty much sums up the decade for me." -- Assistant Art Director Erik Jacobsen

"Toxic" by Britney Spears
"For a while I only secretly loved Britney, but this was the song that made me come out of my Spears shell and realize public Britney adoration is okay -- it's also the only pop song that will always make all of my friends (music snobs and hipsters alike) dance no matter the circumstances!" -- Editorial Assistant Lisa Raphael

"The Remedy" by Jason Mraz
"It was one of the first times I realized how song lyrics could be so meaningful. I felt like Jason was talking directly to me. Plus Jason is awesome and this helped make him a superstar!" -- Photo Assistant Katelyn Mullen

"Welcome to My Life" by Simple Plan
"It's rare that I like a song on first listen -- and this song was love at first verse. Not only is the pop-punk melody perfect rock-out music, but the lyrics feel like they were torn out of my diary." -- Editor-in-Chief Rachel Chang

"Rehab" by Amy Winehouse
"That whole album is on my most played list on my iPod... I couldn't get enough! It's such an addicting album." -- Photo Director Danielle Kepler

Do you agree or disagree? And what's your pick for best song of the decade?

Exclusive Q & A with Kristinia DeBarge

Kristinia.jpg

Kristinia DeBarge is not only J-14's intern, she's the new face of Wet Seal! The "Goodbye" singer has been busy doing meet and greets at Wet Seal stores across the country and has already started recording her second album! J-14 chatted with Kristinia and got the scoop on her Wet Seal campaign, Justin Bieber, and Britney Spears!

J-14: Can you tell us about the Wet Seal campaign?
Kristinia DeBarge:
It's so bizarre because this time last year, I was working at Forever 21 and a Cuban restaurant! I remember going into Wet Seal and seeing a huge poster of Jordin Sparks and thinking, 'That is so cool. I hope that's me one day.' A year later, I'm the new face of a Wet Seal campaign! It's surreal to me.

J-14: Do you have a favorite outfit from the campaign photo shoots?
Kristinia:
My first outfit was this checkered shirt, ripped-up jeans with cowboy boots, a warm off-white sweater vest, and a cute little winter hat. When I'm not working, I'm at home dressed like a regular 19-year-old college girl. I'll be wearing an Abercrombie and Fitch skirt, a button-up shirt, and boots or leggings, a cute tank top, and a jean jacket. When I'm working, I like to be more creative and push the limit with my style.

J-14: Do you want to have your own clothing line?
Kristinia:
That's something I'm definitely working towards. I'm so fortunate that I'm even coming out with clothes with Wet Seal! I had a lot of creative control and freedom. I made sure that all the clothes I'm wearing are very true to me and also stuff that girls can wear and feel comfortable in.

J-14: What's your favorite track off your debut album, Exposed?
Kristinia:
My favorite track off the whole album changes everyday. Some days it's "Died in Your Eyes," some days it's "Speak Up." It depends on my mood, what I'm going through that day, and what I feel like listening to. I love all my songs. I'm so happy and content with this album, which is important since it's my first album. It's so personal to me, and I want to make sure that everybody understands that these are life experiences that I have gone through.

J-14: How did your family react to the success of "Goodbye" and the album coming out?
Kristinia:
They are the most excited family in the world. My family has always been supportive, and their belief and drive made me even more confident and driven in myself. I'm one of those people who loves to work, but I definitely love being with my family. I don't want to ever forget who I am and get caught up in all of that.

J-14: What was it like to interview Justin Bieber as our J-14 intern?
Kristinia:
The other day I looked on YouTube and I'm like, 'Wow, it has so many views already!' That's really cool and a great thing for us. I'm really happy for Justin. It's so cute seeing the little girls going crazy over him and screaming. He's really young and a lot of this he's just getting used to - it's awesome for him. Every time I see him he's so full of joy and excited -- I've never seen a kid so happy! He deserves everything that's coming his way.

J-14: Did Britney Spears give you any advice when you opened for her on her Circus tour?
Kristinia:
She definitely made sure she introduced herself to me and she said hello. She said, "My babies love your song," and gave me a hug. I know that sometimes you never even meet [the headliner performer] -- you go, perform, and that's it. I was thankful that I even got to meet her. She's really nice!

Kristinia DeBarge Blogs: My Fave Summer Beauty Trend!

KristiniaD.JPG
Hey there, J-14ers!
J-14 summer intern, Kristinia here, and, WOW, has it been a busy summer for me so far! My first big TV spot was performing my first single "Goodbye" on So You Think You Can Dance a couple weeks ago -- SO cool!!

Since I'm all about fun in the sun, (I'm a Cali girl, after all!) I thought it would be the perf time to spill my fave beauty trend to you guys! Ready for it? I LOVE neon! When it comes to makeup and nail polish, I'm going to do neon and throw in some Miami Beach colors for the rest of the summer, like, just experiment with it and have fun! When I stopped by the J-14 offices to interview cutie Justin Bieber, I had a bright neon pink mani (you can spot it in the pic above!)

My favorite look for summer is low key: a really pretty, bright eye shadow with a bare face and some mascara. When it comes to lip gloss, I'm really into orange-pink shades. For eye shadow, I really like pretty greens and purples -- colors that stand out on your skin! And when it comes to the best hairstyle for the summer, I'm all about a cute ponytail. Check out the beauty story in the August issue of J-14, on newsstands now, to read more about this summer's hottest beauty trends!

Before I go, I have great news to share! I found out that I'm going to be touring with the one and only Britney Spears for the second leg of her North American Circus tour! I'm opening with Ciara in August and September, (click here for tour dates,) hope to see you guys there! Let me know if you're going!

Spill! What are your favorite beauty tips and tricks this summer? What color mani/pedi do you think is perfect right now - and what are your go to nail polish colors?

Britney's comeback performance -- J-14 takes you there!

This morning J-14 was invited to an exclusive Britney Spears concert at Good Morning America! Not only does Brit's new album, Circus, come out today, but it's also her 27th birthday!

The concert took place in a circus tent, of course, and we were seated 5 rows from the center of the ring! It was awesome! While waiting for Brit to perform, J-14 spotted her mom, dad, brother and two sons, Jayden and Preston, in the audience. The boys were soooo adorable! Jayden even waved to the crowd! Aww! We also spotted one of JB's bodyguards, Mike, watching over the Spears fam!

When Britney finally hit the stage, the crowd went wild! She preformed her new single, "Circus," complete with a fire breather, jugglers and a man on stilts!

brit1.jpg

Then after the commercial break, she performed "Womanizer" and rocked the house!

brit2.jpg

Finally, when all was said and done, a huge cake was brought out and we all sang "Happy Birthday!" (Psst! The cake was red velvet and was totally delish!)
