J-14 Review: Take Action Volume 9

CobraStarshipTakeAction.jpg

Hey J-14ers,

I'm a big fan of compliation CDs -- I have all those punk goes pop albums and will scour YouTube for a good cover, so I was psyched to check out Take Action Volume 9. The whole CD was put together just for charity as part of the 2010 Take Action Tour. We The Kings, Mayday Parade, A Rocket To The Moon, and There for Tomorrow are a part of the tour and the two-disc CD includes 35 songs, and bands like 3OH!3, Cobra Starship, Taking Back Sunday, and All Time Low join them on the album.

There are two things I really like about this CD. One is that 5% of the retail price will be donated to Driving For Donors, a group started by 14-year-old Patrick Pedraja and his family. When Patrick was 10, he was diganosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and at 11, he started the group to get people to sign up for the National Marrow Registry. The other cool thing is that the album isn't filled with hit songs you've already heard on other albums. Eighteen of the 35 tracks are exclusive or previously unreleased, including We The Kings' riveting acoustic cover of Jimmy Eat World's "The Middle."

The acoustic tracks make the mix for me. I love when musicians can strip down their tunes and get to the real essence of the lyrics and melodies. You can really hear the pain in Mayday Parade's "The Silence," and if a song on the mix gets you a bit more down than you'd expect, a tune like Hit The Lights' "Liars And Cheats (Acoustic)" comes along and makes you want to clap your hands -- in the most rockstar way, of course. I was most surprised by There For Tomorrow's "Backbone (Acoustic)" -- it was truly stripped-down and let singer Maika Maile's voice shine through.

3OH!3 and Cobra Starship's start off disc two with remixes of "Don't Trust Me" and "Hot Mess," and they're the kind of versions you want to hear when getting ready to go out on a Friday night. Much of the second disc was hit with the dance stick with tracks like Let's Get It's "Maps" to Lights' "Saviour," which I thought was a Britney Spears song the first time I listened to it. Disc two very quickly moves into the hardcore world with August Burns Red's "Indonesia" but then gets right back to pop punk with All Time Low's "Poision" and The Downtown Fiction's "I Just Wanna Run" - both got me totally pumped up.

Take Action Volume 9 runs the gamut from punk to pop to dance thanks to the acoustic versions and remixes. While I lean towards pop punk over anything else, the compilation has a good mix for everyone -- think the type of CD you could put on when you have friends over and never need to change.

So tell me - what do you think of charity compilation albums?

Justin Bieber and Cobra Starship Have a Dance-Off... Sort Of!

CobraStarshipJustinBieber.jpg

Justin Bieber knows how to show his fangs! The pop star joined forces with Cobra Starship at Sacramento's 107.9 Jingle Ball 2009 show, even making Cobra's signature fang sign with lead singer Gabe Saporta! The two even had a little showdown on stage!

"I was really looking forward to today's show because I've never met Justin Bieber before," Gabe announced. "I challenged him via Twitter to have a little dance-off today. And I'm not gonna lie, I was a little nervous but Justin broke his ankle, so I win by default!" Justin admitted that Gabe won, then decided to do an "epic drum solo" instead! "Thanks for showing me up!" Gabe said. "I just got smoked by a kid half my size!"

What do you think of the Cobra/Justin collab? Who do you think really won?

Boys Like Girls, Cobra Starship, & The Maine rock NYC!

BoysLikeGirlsNYC.jpg

Hey J-14ers,

Last night I saw by far my favorite concert of the year -- OP presents Boys Like Girls with Cobra Starship, The Maine, A Rocket To The Moon, and VersaEmerge. I've never seen so much energy in one show!

TheMaine.jpg

My fave song by The Maine last night was actually the last one they performed (okay, it's one of my faves by them in general anyway!), "Girls Do What They Want." Lead singer John O'Callaghan was so into it felt like he got lost in the song! Plus after their set, I ran into a fan who was so excited to catch one of drummer Pat Kirch's drumsticks -- she said she had to practically fight the crowd to keep it! Now those are real fans!

I've never seen Cobra Starship live, but I have met lead singer Gabe Saporta, guitarist Ryland Blackinton, and bassist Alex Suarez before, so I was psyched to finally see them perform a full set. And they sure did perform for their hometown crowd! "It's good to be home, man," Gabe told the crowd at the beginning of the show. Cobra opened with "The City Is At War," got the crowd in a frenzy when they announced the song "Pete Wentz Is The Only Reason We're Famous," danced like madman to the latin-infused punk song "Smile For The Paparazzi," and rocked out to their newest single, "Hot Mess." But the highlight of the night was definitely their last song, when Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester came out to perform Cobra's hit single "Good Girls Go Bad." It was the first time Leighton ever performed with Cobra live, and she brought two back-up dancers on stage with her! I've never seen a crowd go as nuts as they did for this song.

BoysLikeGirlsNokiaTheater.jpg

Well, that was until Boys Like Girls came on! Sure it helps that I know every song, but they had me hooked from the moment the second they hit the stage covering Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling," which led right into their single, "Love Drunk." I was psyched to hear them play two of my fave tracks off their Boys Like Girls album, "Five Minutes To Midnight" and "Hero/Heroine," and it was awesome to hear VersaEmerge's lead singer Sierra Kusterbeck take on Taylor Swift's part in BLG's newest single, "Two Is Better Than One." But the absolutely best part of the night was when they took on their sick anthem, "The Great Escape" -- not only was it amazing to hear live, lead singer Martin Johnson invited everyone up on stage to sing with them!

It was a crazy way to end an awesome night of music!

Tell me J-14ers -- what's the best concert you've been to this year?

J-14 hangs with Cobra Starship in NYC

cobraj14.jpg

Hey J-14ers,

New York City is pretty busy right about now, thanks to all the New York Fashion Week happenings going on around town, and this Jersey girl got to see it all first-hand! I hung out at the Caravan event during last evening's Fashion's Night Out extravaganza that took place at stores across NYC.

Cobra Starship's Gabe Saporta co-hosted the event, along with All-American Reject's Tyson Ritter, and Gabe even took over the DJ booth for an hour! He told me he didn't think he was a great DJ, but I thought he did a great job! We heard some sweet tunes from the Ting Tings and Cobra (of course!) throughout the night, and who can complain about that? Gabe and I got to catch up again (remember, he was just in the J-14 offices a few weeks ago!) -- turns out Gabe and I went to high school in the same town! I'm always psyched to see Gabe though -- not only do I love their hit single, "Good Girls Go Bad," Gabe's a super nice guy and he used to be the lead singer of one of my fave bands from back in the day, Midtown.

But the night didn't end there! I also saw Greek's Spencer Grammer and Sonny With A Chance's Tiffany Thornton! And at the end of the night, I ran into one of my fave singers, One Tree Hill's Kate Voegele, who was wearing the cutest red dress with a little bubble hem. I last saw her play at Highline Ballroom back in May, and she told me she was just in town for Fashion Week, but she'll be back in NYC this fall on another tour.

It was a night full of fun, sweet music and fashion, and awesome tour news. Plus, I got a sweet prize signed just by Gabe for a lucky winner -- but you'll have to wait for an upcoming issue to get the deets on that! ;)

What do you think of Cobra Starship and lead singer Gabe? Are you into "Good Girls Go Bad?" And what fashions are you psyched for this fall?

Did Cobra Starship ditch Leighton Meester?

Cobraj14Office.jpg

Cobra Starship appeared on Late Night with Conan O'Brien last night, performing their hit single, "Good Girls Go Bad." But lead singer Gabe Saporta's fave gal, Leighton Meester, wasn't there!

Um, did Cobra just ditch the Gossip Girl star? No way! Leighton's shooting GG in New York City, but Conan films in Los Angeles. So what's a band to do? Have R&B singer Estelle fill in, of course! Check out the vid of her singing with Cobra below.

Who do you think sings "Good Girls Go Bad" better -- Leighton Meester or Estelle?

Fun Facts About Cobra Starship!

cobraj14.jpg

Hi J-14ers!

Cobra Starship stopped by the J-14 offices last week and I had a total blast with them! You have to check out theses crazy facts about they dished to me about Leighton Meester, Twilight, and more!

1. Lead singer Gabe is a HUGE Gossip Girl fan. While they didn't chat with Leighton Meester about the show (Ryland says Leighton did tease Gabe for being a GG "fanboy"), they loved working with her in their "Good Girls Go Bad" video. Bassist Ryland called her "an absolute professional," while Gabe let us in on a little secret from the video. "The legs walking over us aren't Leighton's!" Gabe reveals.

2. The boys haven't read any of the Twilight books, but Ryland did ask if I was a vampire (I had a lovely Garfield band-aid from giving blood that day). Don't worry, J-14ers -- I told them about Edwards sparkling abilities and pointed out each of the Twilight hotties to them.

3. Guitarist Alex's fave song off of Hot Mess is the first track, "Nice Guys Finish Last." Gabe tells us the band tends to think up song titles first and writes lyrics around them.

4. Everyone on their record label, Decaydence, are friends, but they admit that they don't really sound like the other bands despite being all lumped together. Cobra is proud of their more electronic sound.

5. Ashley Tisdale has a track on her CD, Guilty Pleasure, called "Hot Mess" -- both titles are also songs off Cobra Starship's! Gabe called this out to her on Ash's Twitter, but Gabe revealed to us exclusively that as of July 8, she hadn't responded to him yet.

6. What would Gabe's perfect girl be like? "A hot mess!" he jokingly said. Ryland admits that Gabe does seem to get all the ladies.

Are you excited for Cobra's new album like I am? Why or why not?

<3,
Emily
