J-14 Hot Band Alert: Young and Divine

Young and Divine.jpg

J-14 is scouting out the hottest bands around... and this week's pick is Young and Divine!

Here are five things you need to know about Young and Divine, whose debut full-length debut album drops in March!

1. Young and Divine got their band name from their own song! "It was the name of the song that is now called "Kings" on the album," singer and bassist JP Clark tells J-14. "That one just stuck from the start."

2. JP, guitarist and vocalist Jake Mai, and drummer Joe Bortscheller will be hitting the road this spring, but first they've got a show on February 27 at Northern Lights in Clifton Park, NY. When they do hit the road, JP will be bringing some interesting items with him. "My own toilet paper for when you stop at a truck stop -- always! -- and my headphones so I can always listen to awesome music," he says.

3. Jake says his favorite song off Young and Divine's self-titled album changes with his mood. "I like to play "Deserved It" live," he explains to J-14. If I'm ready to party I like "Shake That Bubble," but if I'm really sad I like "Hopelessly Game."

4. All three guys have really diverse tastes in music. Joe loves Green Day, Tower of Power, and Muse, while Jake's into Third Eye Blind, The Police, Blink 182, and Aerosmith. "Even though Aerosmith just kicked out the best part of their band, Steven Tyler, which I'm very upset about," Jake admits.

5. The Albany natives are definitely in a New York state of mind -- Jake's celeb crush is Alicia Keys!

Check out Young and Divine's shoutout straight from the J-14 offices and an exclusive acoustic version of their track "Strangers By Day" below!

Taylor Swift took home Grammy gold last night - she won Album of the Year!

"When we're 80 years old, and we're telling the same stories over and over to our grandkids, and they're so annoyed with us, this is the story we're going to be telling over and over again," Taylor said during her acceptance speech. "Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

Nominated for eight Grammys, Taylor took home four -- she also won Best Country Album, Best Female Vocal Country Performance, and Best Country Song ("White Horse").

Beyoncé also won big -- she set a record by being the first female performer to nab six statues in one Grammy night, including Song of the Year for "Single Ladies." B also surprised the audience by telling her husband, Jay-Z, "I love you," during her acceptance speech. The singer rarely acknowledges their marriage in public, and even Jay-Z looked shocked afterwards!

"Here It Goes Again" by OK Go
"It was the first viral music video when YouTube first became big!" -- Assistant Art Director Erik Jacobsen

"Hey Ya!" by Outkast
"This video is just so fun and entertaining, and it's a song that everyone still loves to bop their heads to!" -- Photo Assistant Katelyn Mullen

"Wake Me Up When September Ends" by Green Day
"This movie-like video completely upped the bar on music videos. The love story is so poignant (dare I say it rivals Edward and Bella?!) and the tragedy so heart-wrenching." -- Editor-in-Chief Rachel Chang

"Yo Kanye, I'm really happy for you. I'm gonna let you finish, but Taylor had one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!" -- Photo Director Danielle Kepler

As the decade draws to a close, the J-14 staff reflects back on our favorite songs of the decade:

"Bye Bye Bye" by *NSYNC (Pictured)
"I would spend hours watching TRL learning the music video -- that song made me fall in love with Justin Timberlake." -- Associate Editor Kim Messina

"SexyBack" by Justin Timberlake
"I remember hearing that song for the first time in my car and wondering who on earth was singing it because I couldn't make out the voice at all. At the end of the song, radio station Z100 said it was Justin Timberlake, and I thought, 'This will either make or break his career.' Now I'm glad he took the risk!" -- Assistant Editor Emily Krauser

"21st Century Breakdown" by Green Day
"It pretty much sums up the decade for me." -- Assistant Art Director Erik Jacobsen

"Toxic" by Britney Spears
"For a while I only secretly loved Britney, but this was the song that made me come out of my Spears shell and realize public Britney adoration is okay -- it's also the only pop song that will always make all of my friends (music snobs and hipsters alike) dance no matter the circumstances!" -- Editorial Assistant Lisa Raphael

"The Remedy" by Jason Mraz
"It was one of the first times I realized how song lyrics could be so meaningful. I felt like Jason was talking directly to me. Plus Jason is awesome and this helped make him a superstar!" -- Photo Assistant Katelyn Mullen

"Welcome to My Life" by Simple Plan
"It's rare that I like a song on first listen -- and this song was love at first verse. Not only is the pop-punk melody perfect rock-out music, but the lyrics feel like they were torn out of my diary." -- Editor-in-Chief Rachel Chang

"Rehab" by Amy Winehouse
"That whole album is on my most played list on my iPod... I couldn't get enough! It's such an addicting album." -- Photo Director Danielle Kepler

Do you agree or disagree? And what's your pick for best song of the decade?
