Rapper Mike Jones had a lot to be excited about when he stopped into the J-14 offices to chat about his new album The Voice.
The hip hop artist, who gives his cell phone number in every song and lists it on his website, told us about the thousands of calls he gets every day, his new Twitter habit, what bugs him about girls, and more!
J-14: What do you want fans to take away from this new album The Voice?
Mike: I want people who are fans of Mike Jones or who are getting to know Mike Jones to know from my voice what happened, why it was a four-year delay. I want to let them know I'm still able to bring you all hits like "Next To You," "Cuddy Buddy," "Drop and Give Me Fifty," "Swag Through the Roof," and once ya'll hear the album, ya'll will know "Oh okay, Mike Jones, he went through this. Oh, this is what happened," and that'll justify me and I'll be back. When [young fans] hear this album, they're gonna understand what I went through so they won't have to go through it.
J-14: You have always given out your cell phone number in songs, how many calls do you get in a day?
Mike: Before I came out in 2005, I was getting like 40,000 calls a day on the phone. People were just calling. I answer whenever I'm not interviewing, on a plane, or doing a show. I'm always on the phone, Twittering and talking to the fans. I have a Nokia YouTube phone. It's really just a phone for the Internet. I broadcast live, I can turn the camera around and film me and it goes onto the Internet right then.
J-14: Do you have your own songs as ring tones?
Mike: Yeah. I ain't gonna lie! I really get the feedback from the ladies. I mean ladies are running the radio, running the country, running magazines. You gotta have the feedback.
J-14: Would you rather call or text a girl?
Mike: Depends. If we're arguing I'd rather text 'cause I know I'll really get my point across. When we're both on the phone, we ain't getting nothing accomplished. We'll both be yapping and we are gonna hang up and try again. It just depends on what's going on. If it's the regular "Hey babe," you wanna hear the voice, but if it's when you hit me with some sideway stuff and I'm busy, doing J-14, like right now, I'm going to look at this thing and say "shut up!"
J-14: What are the top songs on your summer playlist?
Mike: My songs, "Next To You," and "Swag Through the Roof." I like "Kiss Me Thru the Phone" by Soulja Boy, and I like Kid Cudi's "Day 'N' Nite." I like music that just makes people feel good. Music that makes not just the artist feel good, but when the artist sees large masses of people feeling good to their music? That's good music.
