So You Think You Can Dance Returns!

SYTYCDancer.jpg
Your J-14 So You Think You Can Dance super fans Erik & Lisa here to chat about last night's show!

Back already for a sixth season (but for the first time in the fall!) it seemed like it was my interest for So You Think You Can Dance that was falling last night. I'm still a big fan, but felt like I've seen it all before. What did stand out to me last night was last season contestant Evan's brother Ryan Kasprzak's tap dancing battle with Bianca Revels. I did think it was odd though how Ryan wowed the judges with his spoken word routine, but Cole (the guy with the funky spiky hair on one side of head) did the same sort of thing -- but badly, and the judges hated him. Which tapper did you enjoy the most? Ryan, Bianca, or the third tapper, Phillip?
-- Erik

I am starting off season six of So You Think You Can Dance with a positive attitude! Maybe this is because I coupled my Dance watching with Glee, the best new show in possibly the world/universe/my DVR. It's also because I was wooed last night with some fab dancers -- I really liked that they focused more on the better dancers than the embarrassingly-bad ones. (Am I the only person out there who actually does not like seeing people humiliate themselves on national TV?!?) But truthfully it's also because I've realized that my fave seasons are always the even numbered ones: #2 was the first I watched and I was obsessy-sessed with Travis, Heidi, and Ivan, both #3 and #5 I only like-liked the contestants, and #4 I was head over heels in LOVE with Twitch, Katee, and Gev, etc... So I'm pretty much positive that season six will host my next SYTYCDance love affair. Siiigh! Can't wait!

So You Think You Can Dance Celebrates 100th Episode!

SoYouThinkYouCanDanceElim.jpg

Hi J-14ers!

Erik here, and since fellow So You Think You Can Dance fan Lisa is out of the office today, I'll be blogging about this week's shows.

Last night's elimination show was SYTYCD's 100th episode. I've watched the show since the first season, so it was fun to see past performances shown again.

SoYouThinkYouCanDanceKatieH.gif

Dancing to promote the Dizzy Feet Foundation was Katie Holmes. What did you think of her performance? I believe that was her real voice and that she sang well... but it was not as OMG! as Tyce Diorio played it up to be. It wasn't live, wasn't on the SYTYCD stage, was lip-synched, and her dancing was relatively simple to compared to the show's contestants' abilities.

At the end of the show we learned Janette and Jason were voted off. Janette totally shoulda stayed, but her slow salsa solo probably lost her some potential votes. Jason was everyone's cutie, but I think Brandon's a better dancer.

SoYouThinkYouCanDanceMeliss.gif

Did Adé and Melissa's breast cancer routine make you cry? Did you like that routine or Brandon and Jeanine's military number? Which past season's performance was your fave -- Ramalama? Tell us what you think!

SYTYCDance Recap: Did America get it right?

SYTYCDRandiKupono.jpg
Here at J-14, some of us have been able to pick up the pieces of our broken American Idol hearts (sniff, sniff, see you next year, our future beloved Adam/Kris/Allison!) due to the wonderful, amazing, super awesome So You Think You Can Dance! We may even dare to say that Dance is BETTER than Idol. (Feel free to agree/disagree/call us crazy in the comments...)

Last night's elimination show brought the contestant count from ten to eight and was the first time where the judges zipped their lips, (well, at least as much as uber talkaholic Mary Murphy can!) and let us decide who got kicked off. We, your trusty J-14 Dance Fanatics Lisa and Erik, dish below!

Erik: I wasn't too surprised with the bottom two guys (Kupono and Adé) and girls (Randi and Melissa) last night. Adé shouldn't have been there, but it seems like he hasn't grabbed America with his personality. I think he had the best solo Wednesday night but I was a little off-put by how quickly he danced to "Unchained Melody." I thought Evan should have gone -- he hasn't performed as well as I thought he could have lately! The paso doble that Kupono and Randi performed was just not good enough and I guess that's what gave them the least number of votes this week. The best performance Wednesday night was Jeanine and my fave guy Jason's contemporary routine to Jason Mraz's "If It Kills Me." It was so hot and romantic! And it was choreographed by my old favorite Travis from Season 2!

BTW, what did you think of Kupono's latest outfit? Oh, and the opening number to Janet Jackson with the dancers dressed in Japanese kimonos (I think?) was pretty cool and quirky! What did you think about it? What song do you want them to dance to next?
Erik's Fave Girl: Jeanine
Erik's Fave Guy: Jason

Lisa: For the girls, I'm not a Melissa fan, so I really thought it was her time to go last night and was happy to see her in the bottom. I'm bad, I know, I just get attached to my favorites -- like, the crazy talented Kayla and Janette, def tied for my top two! I was sad to see Randi go, especially over Melissa. I wore my black unitard today in honor of her (jk, I wish I could wear lycra one pieces to work)! As for the fellas, I still love me some Evan! He's wildly gifted at what he does, and I think he proved in Wednesday's African routine that he can seriously step it up outside of his genre.

Adé has my heart as of now -- I think his ridic suspended-in-air acrobatics and sweet demeanor is a winning combo. Although, I agree with E -- Jason and Jeanine's contemporary routine blew me away and I fell in love with Season 2 contestant-turned-choreographer Travis all over again! I'm hoping Melissa and Brandon go next week. I gotta go with commenter Jaydee, Brandon is a great dancer, but there's something about his personality that I (and if you remember, during tryouts, Mia Michaels) don't like. Oh yeah, and I miss Phillip -- from yesterday's comments, it looks like he was one of your favorites. I agree! :'(
Lisa's Fave Girl: (so tough to pick one!!) Janette
Lisa's Fave Guy: Adé

Alright, fellow So You Think You Can Dance fans -- comment below and tell us: fave guy, fave girl, and who you want to go home!! And, for some Friday Fun, which show is better: Idol or Dance?

Hot Summer TV - Are You Watching?

secretlifeofteenager.jpg

Hey J-14ers,

I am all for enjoying the sunshine, but come 8 p.m., the daylight has pretty much peaced out. So what's a girl to do? Well, if you're like me, you can always check out summer TV. Sure it's full of lots of repeats (not so bad - I have a few missed One Tree Hill eps to catch up on), but there's also some awesome new TV on.

Secret Life of The American Teeanger's second season is on right now, as is the new hit Ten Things I Hate About You on ABC Family, and cable's got talent shows like So You Think You Can Dance? and America's Got Talent. In fact, AGT just happens to be one of Taylor Swift's fave shows.

taylor_americasgottalent.jpg

So tell me - what shows have you gotten totally into this summer? Are you into the talent shows or so over them? And are there any new shows you're super excited to see premiere in the fall?

<3,
Emily

Kristinia DeBarge Blogs: My Fave Summer Beauty Trend!

KristiniaD.JPG
Hey there, J-14ers!
J-14 summer intern, Kristinia here, and, WOW, has it been a busy summer for me so far! My first big TV spot was performing my first single "Goodbye" on So You Think You Can Dance a couple weeks ago -- SO cool!!

Since I'm all about fun in the sun, (I'm a Cali girl, after all!) I thought it would be the perf time to spill my fave beauty trend to you guys! Ready for it? I LOVE neon! When it comes to makeup and nail polish, I'm going to do neon and throw in some Miami Beach colors for the rest of the summer, like, just experiment with it and have fun! When I stopped by the J-14 offices to interview cutie Justin Bieber, I had a bright neon pink mani (you can spot it in the pic above!)

My favorite look for summer is low key: a really pretty, bright eye shadow with a bare face and some mascara. When it comes to lip gloss, I'm really into orange-pink shades. For eye shadow, I really like pretty greens and purples -- colors that stand out on your skin! And when it comes to the best hairstyle for the summer, I'm all about a cute ponytail. Check out the beauty story in the August issue of J-14, on newsstands now, to read more about this summer's hottest beauty trends!

Before I go, I have great news to share! I found out that I'm going to be touring with the one and only Britney Spears for the second leg of her North American Circus tour! I'm opening with Ciara in August and September, (click here for tour dates,) hope to see you guys there! Let me know if you're going!

Spill! What are your favorite beauty tips and tricks this summer? What color mani/pedi do you think is perfect right now - and what are your go to nail polish colors?

Q&A with Cat Deeley from So You Think You Can Dance!

CatDeeleyWeb.gif

Right where American Idol left off, So You Think You Can Dance has picked up! Season five is under way, and they are beginning auditions for season six this month too! We chatted with the super sweet host Cat Deeley for deets on the new season!

J-14: We are huge fans of the show and love watching all of these unique forms of dance! Are you surprised at how diverse the dancers and their styles are?
Cat:
That's what we like to celebrate -- people from all different races, religions, backgrounds, colors, creeds. As long as they've got the talent, passion, and they're prepared to work hard, and show their personality, they are more than welcome to be on the show. We're looking for stars. We're not necessarily looking for a certain body type or a specific style or anything like that. I'm certainly not asking people to fit in certain boxes!

J-14: What style of dance were you really wowed by the first time you saw it?
Cat:
Choreographer Lil C, came on our show and did Krumping for the first time, and it was absolutely incredible. It's almost like fighting and sparring, and there's so much pent-up aggression to it, but it's in the form of dance, which I just think is incredible. Last season Twitch and Kherington did an amazing Krump routine, and it was so different. Kherington was a contemporary dancer, and normally it's all about lines and elegance and flowing, and this was hard-hitting and tough and street, and it's great to see people take on different styles like that and really own them. We take a street dancer or breaker and we go, "what you do is absolutely amazing, your specialty is incredible, but now we're going to put you in a sparkly shirt and tight black pants, and you're going to perform a salsa!"

J-14: What is your favorite part about the show?
Cat:
The best part of the show for me is seeing the grace and being involved in it in a very organic way. If the kids are lining up on the street at 7:30 in the morning and the snow's coming down in New York, it's really interesting to follow their journey and see how they grow and see they do transition into stars that are incredibly professional and know what they're doing. It's a real growth, and to be part of that is really mesmerizing.

J-14: Do you think Season Five will be better than the others?
Cat:
I think every year it seems to get bigger and better. The stunts are bigger, the choreography is more impressive. Because the show comes back bigger every single year, the dancers are elevated to an even higher position once the show finishes.

Are you guys into SYTYCDance? Did you watch last night's auditions? What did you think? Any of you dancers out there?? Do you like American Idol or Dance more? Let us know what you think below!
