Exclusive Q&A with The Vampire Assistant's Josh Hutcherson

JoshHutchersonVampiresAssistant1.jpg

Little Manhattan, RV, and Bridge to Terabithia star Josh Hutcherson's all grown up -- and starring in the first film from the Cirque du Freak Saga called The Vampire's Assistant. He chats exclusively with J-14 about evil vampires, werewolves, and his celeb pals.

J-14: What kind of vampire do you play in The Vampire's Assistant?

Josh Hutcherson: My character Steve is a vampaneze, which is basically an evil vampire. And the difference between the vampires and vampaneze is that the vampires live by a certain code -- they can't kill, they can't do certain things, and they only drink blood to survive. But the vampaneze just do whatever they want. So my character is the reckless type and that was really fun to play. It's definitely different than anything I've played before because I haven't ever really got the chance to play the bad guy kind of role.

J-14: What was the most evil thing you had to do?

Josh: There's a big fight scene between me and Chris Massoglia, who plays Darren. We became good friends during the movie and I literally have to throw him across the room because the vampires and vampaneze have super strength. I throw him and he lands in a pile of chairs and then I was like, "I'm sorry, I don't really mean this," but you gotta do what you gotta do! It was fun playing the bad guy -- you really get to let loose and just be mean and aggressive.

J-14: So how do the vampaneze compare to the Cullens from The Twilight Saga?

Josh: The vampaneze are much more hardcore and open about being vampaneze. The Cullens are kind of shy and reserved and they don't want anybody to know. But the vampaneze are out there like, "Aah! We're vampires! We're going to do whatever we want and drink everybody's blood and go crazy!"

J-14: At first, your character Steve is reluctant to become a vampire, but he does it for his friend. Have you ever done anything like that for a friend?

Josh: For me, my friend recently tried out for American Idol. We had to get up at 3:30 in the morning and drive out to Pasadena's Rose Bowl. We had to sit on the blacktop for like four hours before we even got to go in. Then we got inside and had to sit there in the boiling sun for like another three hours until he got to audition, so it was really hectic. I can't sing, so I didn't audition. He didn't make it past the first round, unfortunately -- he's actually a really, really good singer, but it really depends on what they're looking for. But it was crazy -- and you see a lot of crazy people there.

J-14: Speaking of good friends -- you're good pals with Spectacular!'s Victoria Justice, Avan Jogia, and Simon Curtis. Tell us about your friendship.

Josh: We all like a lot of the same things -- we all like going to the movies, we like the same kind of music, and we're all pretty easygoing people. It just seems to work -- we hang out all the time. We actually love laying on the floor listening to old records. We have this rug in my house that's the softest rug you've ever heard of. So we lay on that and listen to records that were handed down from my parents. I think we're all just really compatible with each other and that makes for a really great friendship.

J-14: And ironically Victoria is playing a werewolf in an upcoming Nickelodeon movie. So who do you think would win the werewolves vs. vampires battle?

Josh: Honestly, I think that the werewolves would. Werewolves just seem so strong, big, and powerful. Vampires are really strong as well, but I think there's something about a wolf, like the wolf integrity. I think they would prevail, unfortunately. Victoria and I haven't had a chance to duke it out -- werewolves and vampires yet -- I'll let you guys know when that happens!

J-14 Exclusive Pics: Taylor Lautner Out with Victoria Justice!

Victoria_Taylor_July_08[1].jpg

The day after his date with Selena, Taylor was spotted out in Vancouver with old friend Victoria Justice. J-14 exclusively broke the news in our April issue that Taylor and Spectacular!'s Victoria are good friends since meeting years ago at the Sharkboy and Lavagirl auditions! Check out these exclusive pics Victoria sent us that appeared in the April issue -- the top one is from last year and the one below from 2006 (how cute are little Victoria and Taylor?!).

The two are currently both in Vancouver, Taylor filming The Twilight Saga: New Moon and Victoria filming a Nickelodeon movie - about werewolves! (Maybe she's getting tips from "Jacob Black" himself?!) They met for lunch on Sunday with his dad and her mom in tow, and then walked around downtown together. Even though they've said before that they're just friends, we can't help but wonder if their time in Canada might lead to something more. Only time will tell!

So what do you guys think? Are Taylor and Victoria cute together? Should he date Selena or Victoria?

Q&A With Spectacular!'s Victoria Justice

Victoria Justice dropped by the J-14 offices to talk about how super excited she is about the Spectacular! premiere tonight on Nickelodeon at TK time. She spilled tons of cool deets about her costumes, her castmates, and more!

J-14: What were the Spectacular! costumes like?
Victoria: All the costumes that my character had to wear were really over the top. They weren't things I would wear hanging out with my friends. When my character was wearing her everyday clothes, she was still really over the top -- I looked like J.Lo in every scene! I had humongous hoop earrings, really bright colors and really flashy stuff. My favorite costume was "On The Wings of a Dream" because I get to rip off this skirt and it turns into a little mini-dress. I thought that was really cool! It had little wings attached.

J-14: How would you describe your personal style versus your character's crazy costumes?
Victoria: My style is definitely more laid-back. I'm the kind of girl that goes to school or hangs out with my friends in sweats and a baggy t-shirt. I love dressing up and looking cute. I'm from L.A., so I never really have to wear that. When I come to New York, I get to wear really cool, layered stuff and it's really fun.

J-14: Have you ever been in a competitive setting like the choir in Spectacular!?
Victoria: Not, but I was in a spelling bee when I was in 4th grade -- I lost. When I was on stage, I didn't let on that I was really upset about it. I shook everyone's hand and wished everyone good luck, but as soon as I got off stage I crawled in my mom's arms and started crying. I wanted to win so badly.

J-14: So who from the Spectacular! cast do you hang out with now?
Victoria: I think everyone was really cool. I'm really lucky because everyone was so nice and we all got along really well. The person I bonded with the most was Simon Curtis. I did every single scene with him and we would have six-hour dance rehearsals together. He's one of my best friends and he's actually screen-testing for my TV show. That would be so amazing to get to work with him every day because we're really good friends.

EXCLUSIVE! Our Event With David Archuleta & Spectacular's Nolan Funk

davidnnolanintune.jpg

American Idol's eighth season kicks off tonight on Fox--but last night, J-14 got our own Idol experience with an intimate InTune concert at Hard Rock Café in New York City's Time Square with last year's runner-up, David Archuleta.

We were there from start to finish, getting a true taste of what David is really like. Right off the bat, it was clear he didn't have even a speck of superstar attitude. In fact, chatting with David is no different than just hanging out with one of your closest friends...he's so friendly, so open, and so sweet.

david1.jpg

The moment we stepped into David's dressing room, he was already singing--it's no wonder he's such a natural. Once he got on stage for his soundcheck, he was even more of a pro... adjusting and tweaking sounds so they were just right.

David was constantly being pulled in different directions: meeting fans, doing interviews, posing for photos, and so much more... but he was totally chill about it all and did everything with his trademark grin and modest attitude. He's just the kind of person you want to be a star.

The "Crush" singer wasn't the only star at the show-- Nickelodeon's Spectacular! star Nolan Gerard Funk opened with two songs from the TV musical (premieres February 16). It was his first stage show ever--and he had a sinus infection!--yet he worked the crowd like he'd been performing all this life. And boy, were the girls screaming! Definitely a new hottie alert!

nolan1.jpg

The screams amplified with David A. got on stage. He sat at his keyboard and belting the lyrics out the lyrics to "Angels" and "A Thousand Miles" with all his heart--and also got up to rock the house with his hits "Crush" and "A Little Not Too Over You." The crowd encored him back for more--so he took requests, and finally went with "I'll Be." When we met him backstage right after the show, he admitted he totally did that on the spot. "I always forget to prepare an encore," he laughed.

Want even more proof that both David and Nolan are amazing performers? They can totally think quickly and go with the flow under pressure. The tracks for David's "Crush" and Nolan's "Don't Tell Me" were swapped on accident. When Nolan heard the wrong track, he entertained the crowd by getting them pumped up. And then when David got the wrong track too, he started shimmying his shoulders and dancing across the stage--yup, don't mistake the sweet Idol as shy, he's got moves!

Watch all the action in the videos below:

After all that, both Nolan and David still made time to sign autographs for fans--always with a smile. If we didn't already "crush" on David before, last night made us crush even more! And we're more pumped than ever for Spectacular (and the songs are sooo catchy they're stuck in our heads!).
